The Physics Partners Study Day for 2024 will be held at King Edward's School, Birmingham on 19th September. This year’s theme, 'Sustainable Energy', promises to be both inspiring and informative for Year 11/12 students. The event will bring together a diverse group of experts from both local universities and companies, and those travelling from further afield, covering topics such as bioenergy, materials science, nuclear energy, hydrogen technology, and autonomous vehicles. These professors and industry professionals will explore the critical role of physics in driving sustainable energy innovation and reveal the exciting possibilities awaiting the next generation of scientists and engineers.
Space is limited to approximately 11 schools (15 students ~ minibus capacity) from year 11 or 12. The day is fully funded and includes lunch and refreshments. Note transport is not included.
Please register only one place for your school. We will then contact you closer to the date regarding any dietary or accessibility requirements for you and your students.
Here's what we have planned:
1. Empowering the Future: Exploring the Evolution of Energy
Presented by Total Flow Ltd, this interactive session will guide students through the past, present, and future of energy, highlighting how they can influence the energy landscape of tomorrow.
2. Shaping the Future: The Crucial Role of Materials Science
Prof. Alessandro Mottura from the University of Birmingham will reveal how advancements in materials science are critical to achieving a sustainable, net-zero future.
3. Social Trust in Nuclear Energy: How Quantum Physics Offers All We Need
Prof. Wade Allison from the University of Oxford will address common misconceptions about nuclear energy and its potential to provide safe, reliable, and abundant energy for the future.
4. Bioenergy and Beyond: Navigating the Multifaceted Future of Low-Carbon Energy
Prof. Patricia Thornley of Aston University will explore the potential of bioenergy and its impact on global sustainability, offering students insights into the evolving energy landscape.
5. Interactive Panel Discussion
A panel featuring all our speakers plus industry leaders Emily Ly from National Gas Transmission and David Keene from Aurrigo. This is a fantastic chance for students to engage directly with experts and ask questions about their future careers and innovations in energy.
